Improving Business Performance – During Covid & Beyond
Well, here we go again, or so it seems. As I write, the number of Covid cases is spiking across the United States, and parts of Europe are back in lockdown.
For business leaders, this seeming return to Square One is compounding the problems they face: in addition to ongoing concerns about world economies, employment and other impacts the pandemic is leaving in its wake, leaders are also contending with employees who are fatigued from the stress and demand the pandemic has put upon them. New problems are cropping up in businesses that four months ago were riding a powerful wave of unity of spirit. Today, many are watching employee morale decline, productivity slack off and innovation fizzle.
Unfortunately, the return to normalcy is going to take a while, and in the meantime, businesses continue to face myriad challenges and rapid change.
Fact is, we are shaping the new normal right now. It’s extremely unlikely that the world will revert to its pre-Covid state, especially the growing prevalence of some elements of the new normal, such as:
- Remote working is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future
- Rapid change has become a fact of life for all of us, including businesses
- The future continues to be uncertain.
There is some good news.
The challenge we outlined above – morale, productivity, innovation – and the realities of the present – ongoing remote work and isolation, rapid change and continuing uncertainty – have a common meeting point, and that is employee engagement.
The problems of low morale, sinking business performance and a tailing off of innovation and ideas are all rooted in employee engagement. And the circumstances in which we find ourselves – still working from home even as we tackle ongoing change and face continued uncertainty – are all putting downward pressure on our employees’ spirits and engagement.
